https://manifestolab.com/Toronto-SickKids-Expansion Toronto SickKids Expansion We think healthcare architecture needs a refresh. The built environment of modern hospitals plays a marginal role in the healing process of individuals. Such design principles, which are predominated by medical and technical determinants, have not changed since the late modern era. The fulfillment of emotional, psychological and social needs of patients, supporters and caregivers is often neglected. The proposal aims to change that experience through biophilic design approach. The term biophilia, coined by biologist Edward O. Wilson in the early ’80s, refers to the hypothesis that humans have a biological affinity to nature. KAWS’ imagery has long possessed a sophisticated, dark humour, revealing the interplay between art and consumerism, referencing both art history and pop culture. Donnelly began his career in street art in the 1990s, becoming synonymous with the name KAWS, a tag that became a staple in his ‘sub-vertisments’ (modifications of commercial works). In addition to more than 40 major pieces exhibited in the Garage Gallery, examples of commercial collaborations designed by KAWS, among them sneakers, skateboards, and toys are on view in a separate archive above Café 999. A massive 5-meter-tall sculpture in the Fire Station courtyard and an inflatable 40-meter public artwork at the Dhow Harbour, also serve to highlight the exhibition.The exhibition design features a series of seemingly random wall fragments and pedestals that form loosely organized galleries. The archive is contained in a cluster of dramatic, precariously balanced vitrines up to 10m long. The exterior of the museum is wrapped in a two story black and white site specific drawing that afford framed views to the courtyard. The massing of the project is developed in stark contrast to the vertically developed tower and podium typologies currently proposed in the area, marking the site as a place for gathering. A large sunken courtyard opens up to the site offering a generous public area which is central to the project. Major recreational programs are developed around this central space and are linked via a universal multi-use change room which sits at the heart of the buildings’ athletic programs. Exposed mass-timber elements comprise the primary structural systems for the levels above-grade. These include the unfinished Shanghai Municipal Council, classified as a cultural heritage building, the so-called ‘Red Building’, which is over 100 years old, and the ruins of a large arched meeting space. The DCA design combines the rich history and architecture of the site with the contemporary urban demands of the city to re-imagine the unfinished masterplan originally proposed a century ago. A new extension building extends the south and west facades of the Shanghai Municipal Council building to enclose the perimeter of the site with a rectangular ‘ring’. The extension uses the same highly modulated masonry as the original Shanghai Municipal Council building, asserting the resulting architecture as a new physical symbol in the city. <img width="1870" IMCN 2040 The Izmir Metabolic Cycling Network is a urban scale assessment developed by FABRICations (Amsterdam, NL) in collaboration with WRI Turkey Sustainable Cities to evaluate the potential of cycling as a primary driver for sustainable urban development in Izmir, the third largest city in Turkey. While the city already has various ongoing initiatives in planning and promotion of cycling infrastructure, this assesement evaluates the potential to introducing a broader multimodal cycling network based on the framework of Urban Metabolism. Cinder blocks are a flexible and diverse building material, composed of cast concrete which can be easily cut and adjusted to suit construction needs. The blocks are available in a variety of sizes, shapes, and fittings, and can be used for both load-bearing and infill walls. Aside from its generic usage, the cinder block is sometimes used in unexpected ways: to create retaining walls, planters, stairs, furniture, perforated walls…. Despite these ‘détournements’, the cinder block holds latent potential which has been largely unexplored.
