Toronto SickKids Expansion
We think healthcare architecture needs a refresh.
The built environment of modern hospitals plays a marginal role in the healing process of individuals. Such design principles, which are predominated by medical and technical determinants, have not changed since the late modern era. The fulfillment of emotional, psychological and social needs of patients, supporters and caregivers is often neglected.
The proposal aims to change that experience through biophilic design approach. The term biophilia, coined by biologist Edward O. Wilson in the early ’80s, refers to the hypothesis that humans have a biological affinity to nature. Thus, the core of biophilic design is to increase connectivity between occupant and the natural environment using direct and indirect nature, incorporating eco-inspired aesthetics into spaces.
